When to Apply

Timing Your Social Security Application

When is the best time to submit a Social Security application? If you call the Social Security Administration five times, you may get five different answers.

You can apply for benefits on the day you become disabled if you believe that you will be out of work for a year or more. Some people will encourage you to file a Social Security Disability application immediately, because any future benefits are retroactive to the date of your application. That is not always true.

In some cases, it is unwise to submit an application immediately, especially if there is not a strong medical record that documents the disability. Each case is different and must be evaluated on its own merits.
